Side Porch Restoration in Richmond, Virginia, BEHR Epoxy Porch Paint on Porch Floor, www.southernhomedeck.com, Southern Home Handyman

This is the first exterior porch refinish project to begin the year in 2025! The cold weather in Richmond, Virginia finally snapped, and temperatures have moved above 65 Degrees! We are so excited!

This project has begun in the 23226 area-code, near the Country Club of Virginia. Our client is a newly expecting mother, and as she readies the house for the babie's arrival, it was important that her side-porch looked fresh and new. She understands the value of the pretty side porch area when Spring arrives!

We made suggestions to use a Baby-blue coloring on the porch ceiling area- a popular color to use on porch ceilings, as it is believed to repel mosquitoes. This may not be completely true, you will need to do your own research, but it is a popular ideology in modern culture. But, what young and expectent mother would not want to pair that color with a new baby comng in March? I think we are creating a "Mom-Porch"!

If the Baby-blue coloring on the ceiling does not keep the bugs away, the newly hand-crafted screen door was made by us from a couple of pieces of wood and a few screens.

All will be painted using BEHR exterior semigloss paint, raw wood will be primed before painting, and the ceiling will get its Baby Blue finish!

I suggested using Garage-floor Epoxy, matched to the color of the trim. And, to finish it off, we will give the floor a dusting of garage-floor-flakes to give it a modern look. The flakes also help to hide dirt and debris and certainly pollen when sometimes you do not have the time to get out and clean the floor. Also, the Floor-Epoxy is a product that will last for a great amount of time. I have learned in 35 years of Sealing side-porches that a simple acrylic garage-floor coating will look nice for a few months, after several months it will start peeling off of the cement floor. Do the right thing and use Epoxy on the floor!

Using a water sealant on a wood deck is essential for several reasons:

  1. Protection from Moisture: Wood is naturally porous and can absorb water, leading to swelling, warping, and rotting over time. A water sealant creates a barrier that prevents moisture from penetrating the wood, extending the life of your deck.

  2. Preventing Mold and Mildew: Moist environments are breeding grounds for mold and mildew, which can cause health issues and damage the wood. Sealing your deck helps keep these harmful organisms at bay.

  3. UV Protection: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause wood to fade, crack, and splinter. Many water sealants also contain UV blockers that protect the wood from the sun's harmful rays, maintaining its appearance and structural integrity.

  4. Enhancing Appearance: A good sealant can enhance the natural beauty of the wood, bringing out its grain and color. It can also provide a smooth, even finish that looks great and feels good underfoot.

  5. Ease of Maintenance: Sealed decks are easier to clean and maintain. Dirt, grime, and spills are less likely to penetrate the wood, making it easier to keep your deck looking fresh and clean.

By applying a water sealant, you can ensure your wood deck remains durable, beautiful, and safe for years to come. If you need help with sealing your deck, feel free to reach out to Southern Home Handyman! We can help you in making a good decision regarding the best products to use on new wood.
