Southern Home Wood Deck
Wood Deck Staining at it's finest!

Cabot brand, Australian Timber Oil

A second coat and a few last touches turned this deck into a luxurious, beautiful work of art. Just look at it. Read previous posts and see how putting extra time into a project like this turned the wood into something beautiful. Time was spent- one day to stain-strip, one day to dry, one day to put first coat of stain on deck, and a final day to put a second coat on the deck. Enough said. This is the color Jarah Brown by Cabot.

Sherwin Williams Water Sealants on Wood Decks in Richmond, Virginia

#Sherwin Williams SuperDeck Water Sealant Colors

                                         ##Color Selector for Wood Decks

I am showing two decks with popular water sealant colors below,
Australian Timber Oil and Ready Seal Water Sealant. This is to show you the difference
between semi-transparent and solid stains.

                                                                       Sherwin Williams

A brief outline of water sealants for wood decks and fences and color theory and what you can expect from using water sealants from Sherwin Williams on wood decks and fences.

I have always enjoyed writing about cleaning and sealing wood decks. There are not a lot of people who feel passionate about finding a nice colored water sealant for a new wood deck or fence. Or, if you have a wooden structure that is very dirty and old-looking, taking a day to clean it with a gentle pressure-wash and coming back and sealing it with the perfect tinted water sealant to really distinguish the character of your home and backyard environment. Tie that coloring to a fence surround and a carpet of green grass, and you have a real work of backyard art!

The Sherwin Williams SuperDeck product is very beautiful. There are four grades of water-sealant products. The word,"Stain" in Wood Deck and Wood Fence nomenclature, is used to specify that we will be using a product that will change the color of the wood. On the east coast of the USA, most often home-builders will use Pine-wood. It is readily available, affordable, and sold at most big-box or lumber stores.

The wood is very pretty. But, like everything- sun, rain, snow, heat, humidity, all environmental factors will cause wear. The original blonde-colored beauty of the wood will dissipate and the elements will discolor wood, the integrity of the wood will change and eventually wood will rot and decay. So, we try to find a sealant that we can use on the wood, before it ever gets to that state, to protect the structual integrity of the wood.

You can use a clear sealant and get many benefits- water repellency and uv sunblock protection, but the protection is very limited if the product is clear. Using a sealant with more color in it, or a product with color in it, better protects the wood by providing a barrier of coloring, which in turn helps better protect the wood from prematurely graying.

The more transparent, the less ultraviolet ray protection and the quicker the wood sealant and coloring will wear away. A Toner product, provides the least amount of protection. Think of it like this, a Toner is 3 parts color to 7 parts clear watersealant. A semi-transparent is 5 parts color to 5 parts clear watersealant. A semi-solid water sealant is 7 parts color to 3 parts clear watersealant.

Look at these color charts from Sherwin Williams and the SuperDeck product. Visualizing it in this manner helps you to better understand how a simple toner may not provide as much protection as a semi-solid product. All of these product come will contain linseed oil when you ask for the oil-based product. There is a like acrylic version you can purchase from Sherwin Williams, but they do not contain the very important Linseed oil within the formula.

Why is Linseed oil important in water seal?

### Enhanced Protection with Linseed Oil in Water Sealants

At Southern Home Handyman, we use water sealants enhanced with linseed oil to provide superior protection for your wood surfaces. Linseed oil seals the wood grain, protecting it against humidity and dirt while allowing the wood to breathe.

The addition of linseed oil makes our water sealants water repellent, ensuring moisture doesn't penetrate the wood. It also enhances the natural grain and patina, giving the wood a rich, beautiful finish.

Linseed oil conditions the wood, hydrating and nourishing it, while tightening the wood fibers. This helps to prevent cracks and splits, ensuring the wood remains strong and durable.

Moreover, linseed oil in our sealants acts as an insect repellent and antifungal agent, protecting the wood from pests and mold. It also provides UV protection, preventing damage from the sun's rays.

#Why do you use Water Sealant on a wood deck? #www.southernhomedeck.com

Using a water sealant on a wood deck is essential for several reasons:

  1. Protection from Moisture: Wood is naturally porous and can absorb water, leading to swelling, warping, and rotting over time. A water sealant creates a barrier that prevents moisture from penetrating the wood, extending the life of your deck.

  2. Preventing Mold and Mildew: Moist environments are breeding grounds for mold and mildew, which can cause health issues and damage the wood. Sealing your deck helps keep these harmful organisms at bay.

  3. UV Protection: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause wood to fade, crack, and splinter. Many water sealants also contain UV blockers that protect the wood from the sun's harmful rays, maintaining its appearance and structural integrity.

  4. Enhancing Appearance: A good sealant can enhance the natural beauty of the wood, bringing out its grain and color. It can also provide a smooth, even finish that looks great and feels good underfoot.

  5. Ease of Maintenance: Sealed decks are easier to clean and maintain. Dirt, grime, and spills are less likely to penetrate the wood, making it easier to keep your deck looking fresh and clean.

By applying a water sealant, you can ensure your wood deck remains durable, beautiful, and safe for years to come. If you need help with sealing your deck, feel free to reach out to Southern Home Handyman! We can help you in making a good decision regarding the best products to use on new wood.

#One of the most beautiful finishes, Ready Seal Water Sealant, Linseed oil and Tung oil-based

##It takes more time to put down, but the results are indisputable. Purely gorgeous! Not many deck refinishers can make a deck look this nice. .. Call, Southern Home Wood Deck at 804-585-8016

Ready Seal Water Sealant for Superior Linseed Oil and Tung Oil finish is a good selection for making Wood Deck and Wood Fences look Spectacular! The product definitely has a beautiful look. The penetrating oils seap into wood pores and help strengthen the integrity of the wood.

There are so many choices on the market for new wood. If you recently built a fence or deck, I like this product a lot. And, mostly because of the linseed oil content. But, we have used this sealant on some decks and it has shown some amount of wear more quickly. I believe this has been because of animals on the deck, their pads scuffing the finish off. And, one person, may have used the deck as a place to wash items, not thinking about the wear and tear that chemicals can have on the surface.

Just use common sense. If your deck gets lots of usage, no matter what brand you use on the surface, it is not a polyurethane like product. The finish is made of parafin-wax, mixed with linseed oil and tung oil. It is very natural.

My experience is that the product will do exceptionally well on wood fences. On upright wood the finish will look pretty for a minimum of three years, and begins to fade after five. Decks, you have kids running overtop of, grabbing handrails, can make it wear faster. Most sealants are going to last about three years if you are not concerned about the look of the wood. The most important thing is that the wood is being protected. If appearance is a concern, I have customers who freshen up the wood every two years. Protection will last for three years at a minimum. If the deck gets direct sunlight, color can fade more rapidly. The perfect scenario is when you have minimal sunlight on the deck, some shade. Then, the appearance will age more slowly.

I hope these thoughts help you out in making a decision as to what product you finally choose to use on your wood deck or fence. Feel free to call me with any questions and I am happy to impart any wisdom on the subject matter.  (804)585-8016

When you want your wood deck or wood fence to look its very best!

Cleaning and Sealing a Wood Deck or Trellis is a lot of work! www.Southernhomewooddeck.com has been in Richmond, Virginia since 1987. In those many years we have seen what type of water-sealants and wood stains work best and last longest. So many questions arise, "What is the best water sealant to use on my wood deck?" "Which water-sealant or stain will last the longest on Pressure-treated wood?"
"Which Water-Sealant is the Best- Behr, Sherwin Williams, Ready Seal, Olympic, Cabot, Thompson's, CWF?"

There are a lot of important decisions to make when spending good money when making a decision on what to use for protecting your wood. You want to make a good decision and not waste money on something that does not work very well.

"Should I use oil-based water sealant, or should I use Acrylic water-sealants?"

Cabot brand, Australian Timber Oil, painted on a new deck by Southern Home, Richmond, VA 804-585-8016

Hello, my name is Joseph Sowell. I have been cleaning and sealing wood decks in Richmond, VA for thirty five years. I know about nearly every product available to the American consumer. I have recognized some very significant traits about the product called, Cabot brand, Australian Timber Oil. Pay very close attention as I know more about this product than most anyone. I have used it extensively and can tell you a few things before you get involved with this water-sealant.

Firstly, the product does look absolutely beautiful when it is applied correctly. Secondly, it is very hard to apply and a good amount of time will go into the final product. Even the smallest deck will require more sealant than you are anticipating. The can says something about using only one coat, but there is no way in the world that you are going to get the finish that you are supposed to get using only one coat. A 10' x 15' deck with several steps will probably require two gallons to get the desired results. New wood will swallow the sealant as if you were applying the product to parched earth.

The project at hand was one where a customer had a kind friend apply the product to her wood deck. He had done a fine job, however, this product is apt to show roller marks and imperfections if only one coat is applied. You will use less product if the deck was sealed in the past. New wood, however, absorbs more product into the pores of the wood. If a stain was on the deck in the past, a stain-stripper must be used to remove all old stain. That task alone can cause the previous product to come out of the pores, necessitating more product.

The product will go onto the surface best with an applicator pad. I have been taught to use this pad for this product, so I cannot tell you whether a roller can be used, but I suspect it would not produce the same, smooth results that I get when using the soft applicator pad.

This project took two vigilant days of attention and two men about 22 hours labor. Material can be applied with a brush. Overlap is one of the hardest parts of this beautiful finish. See pics below.

22 Man Hours

Most people don't want to take on such a project, many hours are involved. Getting the seal to look perfect is not easy. That is where, Southern Home comes in. Call: 804-585-8016 if you decide to hire someone to do the work for you. Our pricing is very competitive. Quality is excellent, always.
