Using a water sealant on a wood deck is essential for several reasons:

  1. Protection from Moisture: Wood is naturally porous and can absorb water, leading to swelling, warping, and rotting over time. A water sealant creates a barrier that prevents moisture from penetrating the wood, extending the life of your deck.

  2. Preventing Mold and Mildew: Moist environments are breeding grounds for mold and mildew, which can cause health issues and damage the wood. Sealing your deck helps keep these harmful organisms at bay.

  3. UV Protection: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause wood to fade, crack, and splinter. Many water sealants also contain UV blockers that protect the wood from the sun's harmful rays, maintaining its appearance and structural integrity.

  4. Enhancing Appearance: A good sealant can enhance the natural beauty of the wood, bringing out its grain and color. It can also provide a smooth, even finish that looks great and feels good underfoot.

  5. Ease of Maintenance: Sealed decks are easier to clean and maintain. Dirt, grime, and spills are less likely to penetrate the wood, making it easier to keep your deck looking fresh and clean.

By applying a water sealant, you can ensure your wood deck remains durable, beautiful, and safe for years to come. If you need help with sealing your deck, feel free to reach out to Southern Home Handyman! We can help you in making a good decision regarding the best products to use on new wood.

#www.southernhomedeck.com, Staining a Wood Deck with two Solid Colors in Richmond, VA

We make Wood Decks and Fences look like New again!
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-beKa90fWOnrlLwe-KBRXw

This was a fairly simple project. The customer wanted to have a solid stain on an older wood deck. We first washed the deck with a simple bleach and detergent solution and let the wood dry. We usually do this to kill algae and mold or mildew. Fungus grows on wood easily in moist or humid environments.

A day later, we returned and applied the Sherwin Williams' Super Deck product. The customer chose a solid stain with a light gray color. He wanted to do a more tedious procedure which may be a tiny bit hard to see in these pictures, but he wanted to have this deck to have a unique look. He decided to use white trimmings.
We used an airless Paint-sprayer to apply a solid coat to all parts of the deck. We finished by trimming with the white handrails and the results were certainly worth the extra time!

If you are trying to make your wood deck stand out, think about interesting color combinations that you can use that might make your backyard a little bit more fun! You can always use different colors a few years from now and change it all again, that  is the fun part of using solid colors.  You can change the colors every year, or every few years. It is worth it to be able to enjoy your backyard and to have a place to relax and enjoy. It is your sanctuary!

Let your mind wander and imagine an early evening with a glass of chablis. Invite a few friends over for a cookout and let them celebrate the new you! You are now the Computer-worker or Number-cruncher who expresses himself/herself with their backyard Deck!

When you want your wood deck or wood fence to look its very best!

Cleaning and Sealing a Wood Deck or Trellis is a lot of work! www.Southernhomewooddeck.com has been in Richmond, Virginia since 1987. In those many years we have seen what type of water-sealants and wood stains work best and last longest. So many questions arise, "What is the best water sealant to use on my wood deck?" "Which water-sealant or stain will last the longest on Pressure-treated wood?"
"Which Water-Sealant is the Best- Behr, Sherwin Williams, Ready Seal, Olympic, Cabot, Thompson's, CWF?"

There are a lot of important decisions to make when spending good money when making a decision on what to use for protecting your wood. You want to make a good decision and not waste money on something that does not work very well.

"Should I use oil-based water sealant, or should I use Acrylic water-sealants?"

We use special detergents with bleach to kill mold and mildew growing on your wood. New Cleaners help the wood look new for longer. Gray and green are removed from the surface and it is at that moment in time we can use a clear water sealant or something with color.

All wood should be cleaned and sealed every 2 to 3 years. Wood Sealants and Stains with water-repelling abilities keep water on top of the wood and not seeping into the wood where rot and decay can occur. Protect your investment with high-quality Sealants and Stains from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, Behr, Thomson's, Olympic, CWF, Cabot, and Sikkens.

How to Clean a Wooden Deck and The Ugliest Deck On The Planet.

www.southernhomedeck.com in Richmond, Virginia and How to Clean and Repair a Wood Deck.

I want you to take a look at the transformation that we made take place at Southern Home when we laboriously refinished a deck that had not been loved for fifteen years. Boards had to be replaced, mold and mildew had to be removed, old finish had to be stripped and removed. Broken pickets beneath the hand-rails needed to be repaired. What a job!

I am going to start with what the deck ended up looking like. But, you need to go back and see the previous pics where I show how Southern Home Wood Decks in Richmond, VA refinished one of the ugliest decks we have ever refinished. It was a crew of three men, "T-Roy", "Calvin Sallie" and myself, Todd Sowell.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, has talent like these guys, just look!

After the deck was cleaned and all of the rotten boards were replaced, Southern Home's crew stained the surface and rails to bring the customer the beautiful picture at the top of the page. We used a solid stain by Behr (available exclusively at Home Depot) and you can imagine how happy the customer was with these fantastic results!
