Southern Home Handyman working in Bonair, Restoration of a Wood Deck, www.southernhomehandy.com

These are two wooden decks on the same property in Richmond, Virginia's Bonair neighborhood. Wood was lightly pressurewashed. Then the wood was allowed to dry. After, we used a solid stain, SuperDeck by Sherwin Williams is a great product to use for good durability and an excellent variety of colors that hold up well over time.

She can expect to get at least 5 years of protection for her wood. The sealant will maintain much of its color if it is lightly pressure-washed every year and a half. This is important to keep mold and mildew from growing on the fresly sealed wood.

If you live in Richmond, Virginia and would like Southern Home Handyman to look at your wood deck and give you color suggestions, or if you would like us to do the work for you,

Using a water sealant on a wood deck is essential for several reasons:

  1. Protection from Moisture: Wood is naturally porous and can absorb water, leading to swelling, warping, and rotting over time. A water sealant creates a barrier that prevents moisture from penetrating the wood, extending the life of your deck.

  2. Preventing Mold and Mildew: Moist environments are breeding grounds for mold and mildew, which can cause health issues and damage the wood. Sealing your deck helps keep these harmful organisms at bay.

  3. UV Protection: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause wood to fade, crack, and splinter. Many water sealants also contain UV blockers that protect the wood from the sun's harmful rays, maintaining its appearance and structural integrity.

  4. Enhancing Appearance: A good sealant can enhance the natural beauty of the wood, bringing out its grain and color. It can also provide a smooth, even finish that looks great and feels good underfoot.

  5. Ease of Maintenance: Sealed decks are easier to clean and maintain. Dirt, grime, and spills are less likely to penetrate the wood, making it easier to keep your deck looking fresh and clean.

By applying a water sealant, you can ensure your wood deck remains durable, beautiful, and safe for years to come. If you need help with sealing your deck, feel free to reach out to Southern Home Handyman! We can help you in making a good decision regarding the best products to use on new wood.
