A simple cleaning of a grey and moldy wood deck and a house power wash. It was a very relaxing home in Westover Hills in Richmond, VA. There are many trees in this area, and the closeness to the James River almost ensures mold and mildew growth. No big deal. Simple cleaning and sealing takes care of the problem, quickly. 

This was simple work. I put a detergent with bleach on the deck surface and then cleaned the deck and fence with a clear water-sealant.

In lovely, "Forest Hill", staining the beautiful deck overlooking the James River. It is a magnificent view. We were refinishing wood using Sikkens Natural-color water sealant. I like this product, because of it's sheen and a light coloring that accentuates the wood color. We stripped and sanded the flooring of the deck first, then we sealed using Sikkens Cetol RE.

Southern Home, Staining a natural Wood Home with Cetol SRD by SIKKENS, hand-painted.

This is why staining a home with Cetol SRD to match the wood deck is so much fun. It took us three days to paint this modern home with this specialized product. One coat will last a few years. We first clean the house using a pressure-washer and we spray the house down with a solution of detergent, TSP and bleach. 

Afterwards, we are left with a beautiful finish to begin applying this special stain and sealant made by SIKKENS. It is a premium product for a premium customer.

Hello, I have created this blog to help some of you understand better what is involved in cleaning and sealing a wood deck. In this day and age, wood decks attached to the back of many homes in the Richmond, VA and surrounding areas are a headache and are becoming a problem for many people in this area. What is the problem, you ask? The problem is that the stains and sealants that have been created to protect your wood deck are harder and harder to get off. Without a doubt, and I can tell you this from thirty years of deck cleaning experience, things are not like they used to be. 

In the present day, sealants and stains are chemically engineered to last. But, with extra strength by chemical modification, products are nearly impossible to remove without the correct chemicals. Here is a deck in Midlothian, Va that I have cleaned for nearly twenty years. It is an awesome deck and the wood has never needed to be replaced. Here we are using the newly modified stain called Olympic Maximum Cedar Natural-tone.

That is pretty much how the cleaning gets done. Come back and see what it looks like later today. We gave the deck a day to dry, now let's put some stain on it.

This was a small deck, but it had it's fair share of problems. It was covered in green algae and mildew and mold and it was imperative to remove all old grime from the deck's surface. It came off without a problem. Under all of the green mold and mildew, there was a stain. The customer said that not much stain was on the deck. That was not exactly true, it was stained three years ago with a dark colored stain. 

So, a mixture of bleach and detergent was used to soap the deck down and kill the mildew and algae. When removed, stain was apparent. Then, I took stain-stripping solution and removed as much stain as would come off. This helps the final stain adhere to the wood properly and last longer. Then, once the deck was stain-stripped, I used an additional coating of bleach and detergent and let it sit on the deck. That helped kill mildew that was rooted in the wood. Once, stained, we don't want a living organism on the wood's surface. We then sealed with Cabot Australian Timber Oil.  I will submit a follow-up picture after I put a second coat on the deck tomorrow. A second coat will take the wood from a matte finish to a shiny or glossy finish. These are the first steps.
